Regional youth forums came about through the initiative of youths and youth organizations throughout Quebec. For several years, these young people and organizations signalled the need to create regional bodies to represent them and act as a privileged representative with the Government of Quebec. In responding to these demands, the Government of Quebec set up a regional youth forum in each region of Quebec, including Montérégie, when it launched its 1998-2001 Youth Action Strategy that is managed by the Secrétariat à la Jeunesse. The Forum jeunesse Montérégie first evolved within the Conseil régional de développement de la Montérégie (CRDM) until spring 2004. Incorporated that same year, the Forum jeunesse Montérégie ceased its activities in 2006. Indeed, on March 29, 2006, Jean Charest’s provincial government announced the creation of three youth forums on the Montérégie territory. This announcement divided the enormous administrative region in order to better respond to the various needs of its clientele. For this announcement, the government also planned on injecting significant amounts in the area in order for the Conférences régionales des élus in the Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent, Longueuil and Montérégie East to be able to develop their own regional youth forum financially. The Forum jeunesse Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent was set up in December 2006, and works, like many Quebec Regional Youth Forums, under the stewardship of the Conférence régionale des élu(e)s Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent, with whom it develops projects by and for young people. |
